This popular-science article provides an in-depth analysis of the biological characteristics, pathogenicity and global spread of single-celled enemies, the protozoa, which pose a serious threat to human health. The article describes the life cycles, transmission mechanisms and diseases caused by the most important representatives of the three main groups of protozoa (Amoebae, Flagellate parasites and Sporozoa): Plasmodium, which causes malaria, Entamoeba histolytica, the pathogen of amoebiasis, and Trypanosomes, the cause of sleeping sickness.
