Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) has been widely used in folk medicine since ancient times. Modern scientific research has confirmed the presence in this plant of biologically active polysaccharides, flavonoids, vitamins, enzymes, amino acids and phenolic compounds. These substances determine the pharmacological activity of aloe vera extract. In this paper, on the basis of the scientific literature, the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, wound-healing and immunomodulatory properties of aloe vera extract are analysed. The toxicological properties of some components of the extract were also assessed. The analysis showed that, although aloe vera extract is a promising natural remedy from a therapeutic point of view, it is important to control the dosage, the duration of use and the quality of the preparation when using it.
