The article analyses the theoretical and methodological foundations of the concepts of religious values and secularism from a socio-philosophical and sociological point of view. On the basis of the teachings of M. Eliade, E. Durkheim and M. Weber, the social functions of religious values are revealed; two historical models of secularism (radical laïcité and tolerant secularity) are compared. The Jadid movement in Central Asia is substantiated as a distinctive synthesis model that harmonised religion and secular enlightenment.
